Evaluation - Martyn, Dan, Scott 14/1/2011
For our media project we chose to do a promotion package for a new film, which included a teaser trailer (our main task) and a film magazine front cover featuring the film and a poster for our film (the two ancillary tasks.)
In what ways does you media project use, develop or challenge froms and conventions of real media projects?
Our media project really uses and develops the typical conventions of a trailer, for example a common convention for a trailer that we use is that the stars of the film are showcased regulary throughout the trailer particulary the main charcter, in almost every film trailer you will see, the main character/characters will always be showcased, this lets the audience know who will be in the film because sometimes you will only see a film because a certain actor/actress appears in it. During our trailer we used a lot of typical and common conventions like the films title may not appear until the end of the trailer and the music plays an inportant role in creating an atmosphere. With regards to the music, we as a group believe the music is very important because not only does it set an atmosphere it also adds tention because as the music becomes more dramatic it draws the audience in. We think our actual soundtrack is very effective because to start with it is slow and ambient, with some long notes but then towards the middle of the trailer the music starts to speed up and build up some tension. At the start of our trailer, key points are shown through titles so that background information about the main character is conveyed correctly. During our trailer we sucsessfully captured a sense of iconography as people instantly recognise the main characters and there roles in the film from the trailer, they can tell this because of the clothes they wear and the way in which certain scenes play out.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Our main product and ancillary tasks are very effective when all seen together as you can clearly see that they are all linked as the magazine cover and the film poster both have the film title which is recognisable instantly, also they also show that the main character and establish that visual connection as to who the main character is and what he looks like. From the information the audience gets from looking at adverts on magazines and posters and other media types they can instantly tell that who the main character is before they see the actual film. Film trailers also play a big part in establishing a connection between the audience and the film. What film makers are doing when they make a new film they effectivly make a brand and this is what we have tried to accomplish in our work. When film makers create films they also create posters and adverts to promote their film and to increase the amount of people that go and see the film thus increasing their profit. In our trailer we captured the effect in making a trailer that captures the audiences attention but at the same time does not give too much away plot wise.
What have you learned from your audience feedback ?
Some of the things that we learned from our feedback for our trailer was that the music was credited with as the best thing about the trailer and that it complimented the scenes perfectly, this is good as the music plays a vital part in grabbing the audience's attention anf makes them want to watch more of the film. The music also adds dramatic effect to the trailer and builds up tension as the trailer progresses. One bit of criticism that we recieved was that there was not much talking in the trailer and if we had to redo our project we would make sure that there would be more talking involved. A positive thing that people said was that people thought it was around the correct length for a trailer which is good because if you have a trailer too short then people will not fully understand the story you are trying to portray, but at the same time if a trailer is too long the audience may lose interest and will make them think that they have an idea of what is happening in the film and not make them want to watch it at the cinema. Another negative we got was that some of the locations in which the scenes were shot weren't the best looking places to shoot a scene, the scene people mentioned the most was when Dan kicked Scott, they said that the scene was too open and empty where as it may have been better to have more props in the background to make the scene more appealing. Overall most people said that the trailer was fast paced and exciting and would make them want to see the film.
We think that parts of our trailer worked really well such as the scene where Dan is walking down the hill with the gun case and then the scene directly after that where Dan draws the gun from the case. Another scene that we think went well was the scene with the drop kick at the end of the trailer, but the thing we think went well over everything was the music, the music in the trailer suits it perfectly and most of our feedback agreed with us, the timing of the music is great with it fading in and fading out when needed. Some things that didnt work as well as we planned was the scene where someone is being interogated in the woods we all wish that the scene could have involed more violence and that you could have also been able to hear the speaking, another scene that we would change would be the scene where Dan throws Scott into the wall, if we had time we would have changed that with a different scene where the would have been talking which would solve the lack of speech problem.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
During the time we had to complete our project we used many forms of technology to advance our work to the final product it is now. In our construction of our trailer we mainly used a handheld camcorder to record our work, we had all used cameras before but we had to use this technology to acomplish our goal. Once our filming was complete we had to upload our recording to the Mac computers via a data cable when our work was on the Mac's we had to edit it together to look like a trailer, as we did not film it in the correct order. We edited our work together using imovies Scott had already used imovies before and taught Martyn and Dan how to edit so that they would be able to continue working if Scott was away. In our research we used microsoft word, publisher and our blogs to write up any information we had created, we also used a dvd which had film trailers on where we got our conventions and watched the trailers for our research, we also used the internet to conduct our research for our ancillary tasks. In our planning we used the internet abnd microsoft word to record our planning and finally in our evaluation stage weused our blogs to update our work. Throughout our project we constantly updated our blogs.

Potential Target Audience - Scott - 10/1/11
For our project our desired target audience we have aimed our main task and our ancilery tasks at men aged 15-30 as men are more likely to go and see action films compared to women. The age of our target audience is quite young as older people enjoy different types of genre of film to watch. We attracted our audience by adding fast paced chase scenes with dramatic music over the trailer drowning out only when we have speaking. we also attracted our target audience by adding action packed fight scenes and gunfights into our trailer.
